How do I check a company by its VAT number?

We validate it in VIES, read the official company register where one is available (founding date, legal form, capital, managers, filed accounts, status) and public sources on the web. Is the company check free?

What does "prepayment only" mean?
That public data shows serious warning signs — a very new company, missing annual accounts, an invalid VAT number, deletion from the register or seizures. Asking for payment before loading, or declining the load, is the sensible move. Low-risk companies get standard payment terms.
